Reason:
Upgrade failure on devices installed with 16Mb PCL option when following standard procedure.
Detail:
Device repeats Initialization process after upgrading
Servicing Work:
Canon Inc. have for sometime been working on a resolution to the problem detailed above when
upgrading the system software to version 60.03. Until a complete solution has been found we have
found during our testing the following workaround to be successful and will allow you to upgrade
any machine for which your customer may wish to have benefits that are provided in this upgrade.
Canon Inc. have also amended their relevant service Information to align with the detail of this
workaround until such time a complete solution can be found.
Workaround for upgrading the iR1022iF to version 60.03

Print out Spec list to confirm current set up and which version option is installed.
Upgrade system software from version 5.01 to Special Version 5.99
Back up customer data in the event of any problems which may result in losing this information.

It is possible that when the machine is powered back on, the display will say A3 as the paper size, if
this happens then it will be necessary to carry out an “All Clear”. After this the machine should work
correctly and version 60.03 installed.

In the event of other problems
In the event of a major problem in which the machine can not be used or can not get into Download
mode, it is possible to put the machine into a forced download mode in order to upgrade or
downgrade.
Connect a jumper pin to JP 141 located on the lower right hand corner of the Image processor PCB.
This will put the machine into forced download mode when powered on and you can continue to
load system software in the usual way.
Upgrading iR1018 and 1022 basic models.
According to information received there does not seem to be any problems upgrading these models
and should work in the normal way, however in the event of any difficulties the above workaround
will need to be applied.
Points to Note When Servicing:
This is an issue only when upgrading from Version 5.01 to version 60.03 or higher. When
upgrading from version 60.03 to any later version then please follow the standard process as
described in the Service Manual.

How to upgrade to Ver60.xx and how to equip PCL kit for
iR1018/22 series iR2016/20 series
Reason:
User Data and address book is deleted when device is upgraded to
Ver.60.xx from old version or PCL kit is equipped.
Detail:
We have to keep Address Book and User Data before upgrade to ver60.xx and
equip PCL kit because these data will be deleted after that. There are two
measures how to upgrade to Ver60.xx according to device configuration. And
there is one measure how to equip PCL KIT. Please refer to relevant measure for
each device configuration.

How to upgrade to v60.xx (For the models equipped either
SEND or FAX function)
The models installed either SEND or FAX function store ADDRESS BOOK.
We have to export ADDRESS BOOK and USER DATA to PC before upgrade
to V60.xx if device is keeping some data. After that we have to import the
data exported to PC. The detail explanation how to upgrade is below.
Preparation:
Just in case, Back up some User Data to paper by Print List function.
*User mode & gt; “Report Setting” & gt; “Print List” & gt; Print some data
1. Upgrade to Special firmware (*Ver.10.99 or 15.99) by SST.
Refer to Service Manual regarding how to upgrade by SST.
2. Back up User Data to PC by USB Export function.
Refer to How to back up by USB Export function written at end of this
document.
Upgrade BootROM only to Ver60.xx by SST. And then turn off and on the
device power.
4. Upgrade System Firmware, Language and PCL to Ver60.xx by SST. And
then turn off and on the device power. (All clear might be executed

automatically)
5. For double-checking, perform “Service Mode & gt; CLEAR & gt; ALL”.
6. Import User Data has been exported by USB import function.
*You have to upgrade to Verxx.99 in order to activate USB export function because old
version (before Ver10.02 and 15.01) might not activate USB export function correctly.

export to PC. We have to keep User Data by Report print function before
upgrade to v60.xx. The detail explanation how to upgrade is below.

When PCL kit is equipped to device we have to execute “ALL CLEAR” after
equipment. And all USER DATA and ADDRESS BOOK are deleted. We have
to keep User Data by hand before equip PCL kit. The detail explanation
how to upgrade is below.
1. Back up some User Data to paper by Print List function.
*User mode & gt; “Report Setting” & gt; “Print List” & gt; Print some data
2. Equip PCL KIT to device.
3. Execute “Service Mode & gt; CLEAR & gt; ALL”.
4. Enter the User Data to device by hand.

How to back up by USB Export function
- To export and import user data, a PC and a USB cable are required. Have them
on hand.
Exporting user data
1) Output a user data list in the following user mode. Report Setting & gt; Plint List
& gt; User Data List
2) Press the following keys to enter the service mode. & gt; 2 key & gt; 8 key & gt;
3) Select " #SYSTEM " using left or right button, and then press the OK.
4) Select " #SYSTEM SW " using left or right button, and then press the OK.
5) Press the following keys to display " SW003. " # & gt; 0 key & gt; 3 key.
Message: #SYSTEM SW003 00001000
6) Position the cursor at Bit-6 (second from left) using left or right button, and
then press the 1 key. Message: #SYSTEM SW003 01001000
7) Press the OK key. Check that " SW003 " changes to " SW004 " .
Message: #SYSTEM SW004 00000000
8) Press the Reset key to exit the service mode.
9) Turn off the main power switch, and then turn it on again.
10) Start the PC and connect it to this machine with a USB cable.
11) Open My Computer on the PC to check that the " Removable Disk " icon is
displayed. If the " Removable Disk " icon is not displayed, repeat the above
procedure starting with step 1.
12) Double-click the " Removable Disk " icon, and then copy the user data
(address_book.abk and user_data.dat) onto the Desktop.
13) Close the window on the Desktop.
14) Turn off the main power switch of this machine.
15) Disconnect the USB cable from this machine.
Importing user data
1) Press the flowing keys to enter the service mode. & gt; 2 key & gt; 8 key & gt;
2) Select " #SYSTEM " using left or right button, and then press the OK.
3) Select " #SYSTEM SW " using left or right button, and then press the OK.
4) Press the following keys to display " SW003 " .# & gt; 0 key & gt; 3 key
Message: #SYSTEM SW003 00001000
5) Check that Bit-6 (second from left) is set to set to " 1 " . If Bit-6 is not set to " 1 " ,
position the cursor at this bit using or and then press the 1 key
Message: #SYSTEM SW003 01001000
6) Press the OK key. Check that " SW003 " changes to " SW004 " .
Message: #SYSTEM SW004 00000000
7) Press the Reset key to exit the service mode.
8) Turn off the main power switch, and then turn it on again.
