1. Content
You have purchased a quality receiver from the SKYMASTER®-Programme. We are sure that you will gain a lot of enjoyment from our products as
they are all subjected to stringent quality controls. Welcome to the new era of digital television! SKYMASTER® DTR 4000/DVRT 2000 are digital
receivers for the reception of digital terrestrial TV and Radio programmes.
To receive digital programmes, you will require a conventional roof antenna as a rule, or in some cases – according to the intensity of the reception –
a simple indoor aerial.
When using a hard disc, the DTR 4000 converts into a digital video recorder in no time at all. A hard disc with 240 GB storage capacity can record
up to 120 hours.
The DVRT 2000 has a standard hard disc capacity of 80 GB (subject to change without prior notice).

Suitable types of antennas
For the reception of digital channels you will require – depending on the reception area…
-

a UHF-outdoor antenna (channel 21 to 69) and/or
a UHF-outdoor antenna (channel 5 to 12) and/or
an indoor aerial (VHF/UHF), if possible with an adjustable amplifier or
an active DVB-T-antenna, which can be supplied via a 5 Volt-voltage from the receiver.

Obtain the relevant information about the programmes available in your region and the requirements
for antennas before you consider whether to purchase a new antenna. You should first try to obtain
good reception results with your existing antennas. If you should encounter problems with the
reception, we recommend trying out different locations. Under certain circumstances, communal
antenna systems are not suitable as the said systems could comprise components (filters etc.),
which are not suited to digital reception.
Installation and alignment of the antenna
For the initial alignment, we recommend the installation of the receiver and a portable TV set in the
vicinity of the antenna. A signal intensity display is provided for the alignment of the antenna – this
will be described in greater detail later in this user manual. Slowly swivel the antenna in different
directions and observe the signal intensity displayed on the screen. If you cannot find a signal rotate
the antenna 90º (the “rods” indicate upwards and downwards) and repeat the search for the signal.
If currently using a DVB-T-antenna, the antenna voltage (+5V) must be set in the menu
“Environment” ȦȨ “TV Settings”.
Installation to the TV set
A SCART-cable should be used to connect to the TV. If you have a TV with 16:9 format, you can
adjust the settings of your TV on the on-screen menu of the receiver The default setting of the TV
screen format is 4:3. If your TV set is not equipped with a Scart socket, use an appropriate adapter
(HF modulator) or S-video outlet (9) and stereo outlets (3).
Note: Most TV sets equipped with Scart jacks are automatically switched to AV operation via the
connected devices (e.g. video recorder, DVB-T or SAT receiver). This is achieved by a switching
voltage (12 Volt), which compels the television to switch over. You can deactivate this useful function
by pressing the button TV on the remote control of your DVB-T receiver. The TV set can now be
operated manually again.
Connecting to a video recorder
If your video recorder is equipped with a Scart socket, connect your receiver to it. Please read the
operating manual for your video recorder to see which buttons on the recorder must be activated to
record terrestrial digital television and how the TV picture can be displayed on the television screen.
If your video recorder is not equipped with a Scart socket, we recommend the SKYMASTER® Videoconverter 1100 (part no.: 2404)

Hard disc installation
Hard disc installation for upgrading the DTR 4000
1. Disconnect the mains plug.
2. Unscrew the four screws on top of the device.
3. Set the hard disc's jumper (c) to position MASTER (MA). Please check the hard disc's manual if
the setting of the jumper is not clearly described!
4. Connect both, the 40-pin male connector (b) and the 4-pole power connector (a) with the hard
disc. Ensure the connectors are aligned properly and firmly connected!
5. Close the cover and turn the device on.
6. Initialising/formatting of the hard disc may take several minutes.

Note: A variety of the most common IDE hard discs (40 - 240 GB) were used to test the DTR 4000.
We would like to point out that not all commercially available hard discs are suitable for the PVR use,
e.g. IDE hard discs having very high power consumption or discs requiring a high starting current are
not recommended. Generally speaking, SATA hard discs are not suitable! SM ELECTRONIC GmbH
can not be held responsible for any damages resulting from improper installation!

Use the VOL (+/-) button to adjust the volume of the TV output. The volume of the video recorder
output will not be influenced; therefore, any currently running recording of your video recorder will not
be disturbed.
Muting
To mute the TV sound, press the Ein/Aus [On/Off] button. Press the button again, and the TV sound
will be heard at the previously selected volume.

Favourites lists
You can create a total of 4 lists of all your favourite programmes. Once created, they can be
accessed by pressing the red, green, yellow, and blue function keys. As described in the “Options”
function above, you can also invoke your favourite lists from the general programme list.
If you do not create your own favourite programmes, empty lists or an error message will be displayed.
To compile your own favourites lists, open menu “Programmes” ȦȨ “Manage programmes”:

Compiling favourites
Press the MENU button, followed by the yellow function key and select “Manage programmes”: Press
the CHANNEL (Auf/Ab) [Up/Down] button to select your programmes from the programme list; then

Once you have stored the information and after leaving the menu, you are ready to take advantage of
your favourite lists. Other programme management functions will be discussed in more detail later
on.

Teletext/Videotext
Many stations broadcast additional services and informational programmes. Teletext pages are
“electronic news”, which allow you to obtain the latest news reports, sport results, weather forecasts,
commercial offerings, and much more. The coverage and the content are determined by the
programme provider. You will always find the directory on page 100. Here, you will find an overview
of other sub-pages (e.g. page 200 Sports) Always enter the page number using 3 digits or use the
navigation button CHANNEL (Auf/Ab) [Up/Down] and VOL (+/-).

Some stations provide a preview of up to a fortnight. The desired day can be selected by pressing
the VOL (+/-) button.
Nearly all EPG overviews allow the pre-selection of broadcastings for future recording by pressing the
blue button.

There are a total of 8 timer settings. When pressing the blue button the selected broadcast will be
entered into the next available slot. The broadcasts can be adjusted in the menu “Timer Settings”,
which will be displayed automatically. When recording a broadcast, it is recommended to increase the
recording time beyond the original broadcasting time to allow for possible overruns. Under the
function “Type” you can select to either view or record a broadcast once only, daily or weekly. When
selecting “Mode” you determine whether you would like to record the programme with the video
recorder or if you would like to watch the programme at a pre-selected time.
Live: At a selected time, the receiver will switch to the pre-determined programme. This type of
programming is helpful, if you would like to watch a specific programme but you don't want to record it.
Recording: The pre-selected programme in the timer will be stored on the hard disc.
Playback: Recorded broadcasts, which are already stored on the hard disc, can also be started at
any pre-selected time.
Direct recording: You can directly record currently running TV programmes without invoking the
programme list, the EPG or the timer menu. Press the red function key and select the duration of the

13. Troubleshooting
No antenna signal

(no signal indicator at the device and via the signal indicators in the OSD):
1. Firstly, check the antenna cable and all the connections between the antenna and the receiver.
2. No digital terrestrial signal is transmitted in the region or the antenna installation is not suitable for digital signal
reception. Connect the receiver to an indoor antenna and repeat the channel search run.

No picture
1. Since the connection between the DVB-T receiver and the TV set is via a Scart cable, the TV set has to be
switched to AV mode. Press the “AV”, “EXT” or “0” button on the remote control of your TV set.
2. If the TV set no longer automatically switches to the AV mode, press the “TV” button on the remote control of
your DVB-T receiver.
Malfunctioning
1. The device displays incorrect programme times in the EPG or the wrong time: After switching on the receiver the
data has to be read and evaluated first. Depending on the channel, this procedure can take a certain amount of
time. Sometimes it may even be necessary to restart the EPG or to switch the channel position.
2. The device does not respond: Simply disconnect the mains plug and wait a few seconds before reconnecting the
device.
3. Temporary reception problems caused by DECT or mobile phones. Choose for transmitter- /charging station of
telephone new location far away from receiver
4. No booting or hard disc error:
- Is hard disc pre-setting on “MASTER”? Please check jumper.
- Disconnect all connections from hard disc. (First disconnect main power cable). If receiver boots normally,
jumper of hard disc could have wrong setting, hard disc could be defect or wrong hard disc type (SATA-type or
current is too high)

GB 19

14. DVB-T dictionary – explanation of technical terms
Digital reception:
Digital transmission technology will replace existing analogue
technology by 2010.
DVB:
DVB abbreviation of Digital Video Broadcast.
EPG:
EPG abbreviation of Electronic Program Guide. The EPG provides
information about the current and future programmes.
FEC:
Forward Error Correction – similar to a CD player – generates (as far
as possible) an error-free signal from a distorted or weak signal.
Hard disc
Hard disc will storage all records of TV / radio programs and videos.
Right hard discs are IDE hard disc up to 240 GB. Recording capacity in
hours depends on Size of data stream. A 80 GB hard disc stores
approx. 44 hours movies and a 120 GB Hard disc approx. 66 hours.
Frequency:
1 Hertz = 1 vibration per second. During radio and television
transmission the carrier frequency of a channel “vibrates” between
approx. 47 million and well over 800 million times per second.
Modulation:
Radio signals – in order to be transmitted – have to be “modulated”.
The types of modulation for analogue signals are AM (e.g. medium wave
or TV picture) and FM (TV sound). QAM is the modulation of digital
signals.
MPEG:
Moving Picture Experts Group. There are – depending on the
application – various MPEG standards which all fulfil a purpose: To
compress large amounts of data (picture and sound) – preferably
without the loss of visible and audible quality.
OSD:
On Screen Display. The OSD is the receiver’s on-screen menu. It is
possible to access channel information or change receiver settings via
the OSD.
PVR
Personal video recorder. PVR receiver are called receiver with
integrated hard disc.
QAM:
See modulation.
Scart:
Standard 21-pole connector for bidirectional picture and sound
transmission. Switching voltages, which, e.g., switch the TV set, are
also transferred. A 10-pole Scart cable is sufficient to operate your
DVB-T receiver.
Signal quality:
The signal quality at the antenna input of the receiver is especially
important for digital transmission. The signal quality displays the
integrity of the signal, which is subject to numerous interferences along
the transmission path. The FEC (see above) of the receiver tries to
re-establish the original status of the original signal.

GB 20

Signal strength:
The signal strength displays the size of the signal level. The signal of
a weak or very remote transmitter can be improved by an amplifier;
however, this can also cause the signal quality to deteriorate. The best
solution is a high-quality and exactly aligned roof antenna with a highlevel of antenna gain. Note: Antenna amplifiers amplify the entire
signal – including interferences!!!
S-VHS connection
High value video signal connection by separate singles of colour and
brightness.
Terrestrial:
Terrestrial channels are transmitted and received on earth
(Latin “terra”). This includes, amongst other things, the DVB-T-relevant
frequency ranges UHF and VHF.
Carrier/Channel
The frequency ranges VHF and UHF have a restricted number of
different channels. All the channels have different carrier frequencies
to ensure that they can be selected by the recipient. During analogue
transmission, each TV channel or radio station occupies a complete
channel; during digital transmission, each channel can contain
numerous TV channels and radio stations!
UHF:
A UHF antenna is required to receive channels in the UHF range
(channels 21 to 69, bandwidth 8 MHz). Provided that the signal at the
reception location is strong enough, an indoor antenna, which is usually
equipped with a UHF and VHF antenna, may also be sufficient.
VHF:
A VHF antenna is required to receive channels in the VHF range
(channels 2-4 and 5-12).
Video standards:
If you use the DVB-T receiver outside Germany, you may have to adjust
the standard for colour transmission to the connected TV set to ensure
perfect picture and sound quality: The prevalent standard for colour
transmission in central Europe is PAL; SECAM is widely-used in eastern
Europe. The standard for colour transmission in the USA and Japan is
NTSC.
